Sublimation vs Screen Printing vs Heat Transfer: Which Is Best for Sportswear?

A plain-English comparison of the three main ways to decorate jerseys and teamwear, with when to use each one.

The way a design is applied to a jersey affects how it looks, how it feels and how long it lasts. Here are the three methods you will be offered most often, and when each one makes sense.

Sublimation

The design is printed on transfer paper and then heat-pressed into polyester fabric, where the ink turns to gas and bonds with the fibres. The result is part of the fabric itself.

  • Best for: full-colour designs, stripes, gradients, all-over patterns
  • Pros: will not crack, peel or fade with washing; no extra weight; unlimited colours
  • Limits: works on light-coloured polyester only, not cotton

Most modern soccer jerseys, basketball jerseys and cricket jerseys are sublimated.

Screen printing

Ink is pushed through a mesh screen onto the garment, one screen per colour.

  • Best for: simple logos with few colours on larger runs
  • Pros: bold, opaque colour; works on cotton and dark fabrics
  • Limits: each extra colour adds set-up; thick ink can crack over time on stretchy fabric

Heat transfer (vinyl)

Cut vinyl or printed film is heat-pressed onto the garment.

  • Best for: player names and numbers, small runs
  • Pros: each piece can be personalised cheaply
  • Limits: sits on top of the fabric, so it is less breathable and can lift after many washes

Embroidery

For crests on tracksuits, polos and hoodies, embroidery gives a premium, durable finish. It is less suited to lightweight match jerseys because it adds stiffness.

Quick recommendation

Sublimate the jersey, then sublimate or heat-press names and numbers. Embroider crests on outerwear. If you are building your own label, combine these methods with branded labels, covered in our private label guide.
