MOQ Explained: How Minimum Order Quantities Work When Sourcing Custom Sportswear

MOQ is the number one blocker for first-time sportswear buyers. Here's how minimum order quantities actually work, why factories set them, and how to negotiate a lower one.

"What's your MOQ?" is usually the second question we hear from a new buyer, right after "how much does it cost?" And it's often the deciding factor in whether a small club, startup brand, or first-time importer can work with a given factory at all. Here's what MOQ actually means in practice, and how it's calculated.

1. Why Factories Set a Minimum Order Quantity

MOQ exists because of fixed setup costs that don't shrink with order size: cutting a fabric roll, programming an embroidery or sublimation print run, dyeing a batch to a specific Pantone color, and setting up a production line all cost roughly the same whether you order 20 pieces or 2,000. Below a certain volume, the factory loses money on setup costs alone.

2. Typical MOQ Ranges by Product Type

  • Sublimated jerseys (custom design, no dye lot): Often as low as 20–50 pieces per design, since sublimation prints directly onto white fabric without a separate dyeing step.
  • Dyed/solid-color teamwear: Usually 100–300 pieces per colorway, because dyeing a small fabric batch to an exact custom color isn't cost-effective below that.
  • Leather jackets and goods: Frequently 50–150 pieces, driven by leather hide cutting efficiency and hardware tooling.
  • Soccer balls: Can start at 100–500 pieces per size/design depending on stitching method (hand-stitched vs. thermobonded).

3. How to Legitimately Lower Your MOQ

  • Choose sublimation over solid dye + screen print. It removes the dye-lot minimum entirely.
  • Order multiple sizes under one design. Most factories count MOQ per design/colorway, not per size — so 50 jerseys split across S–XXL in the same design usually meets a 50-piece MOQ.
  • Consolidate SKUs. Instead of 5 designs at 20 pieces each, one design at 100 pieces is far easier to accommodate.
  • Ask about sample-to-bulk pricing tiers. Many manufacturers, including us, offer a paid sample run below MOQ so you can test the market before committing to a full production order.

4. MOQ Is Negotiable — But Ask Early

MOQ is rarely a hard rule; it's a business decision the factory makes based on order value, relationship potential, and production slot availability. Being upfront about your growth plans ("this is a test order, we expect to reorder quarterly") often gets a first-order MOQ waived or reduced, especially from a factory looking to build a long-term account.

US SPORT CLUB works with brands from single-store retailers to national federations, and we quote MOQ per product type on every request for quote — including flexible options for first-time buyers who want to test quality before scaling up.
