How to design basketball uniforms that look sharp and play well: cuts, fabrics, numbering rules and reversible options.
Basketball is fast, indoors and hot, so basketball uniforms need to breathe and move without getting in the way. Here is what to think about when you design yours.
Jersey cut
Most teams choose a sleeveless jersey with wide armholes for free shoulder movement. A slightly longer body stays tucked into the shorts during play. Women's and youth cuts differ, so specify them when you order.
Shorts
Basketball shorts are longer and roomier than training shorts, with a wide elastic waistband and drawcord. Side panels in a contrasting colour are a simple way to make the set look finished.
Fabric
Lightweight polyester mesh or interlock keeps players cool. Mesh side panels add ventilation. See our fabric guide for a fuller comparison.
Numbers and names
Leagues often have rules on number size, position and contrast with the jersey colour, so check your league's rules before finalising the design. Numbers are usually on the front and back, with the name above the back number.
Reversible sets
Reversible jerseys, with a different colour on each side, are popular for training and school teams because one jersey works for both home and away. They cost a little more but save buying two sets.
Printing
Sublimation suits basketball well because it adds no weight and will not crack. Read sublimation vs screen printing to compare.
Complete the set
Teams often add shooting shirts, hoodies and tracksuits for warm-ups and travel. Browse our full basketball range.
